🎧 Listen to this Recipe!
"Welcome back to my kitchen, food lovers! Today, I’m excited to share my all-time favorite beginner-friendly project: making a delicious sourdough starter at home. Honestly, there’s nothing quite like the smell of bubbling fermentation filling your space—it’s so rewarding! You'll need simple ingredients like all-purpose flour, water, and a touch of whole wheat or rye flour if you want a little extra boost. Now, for the fun part—the instructions. You just combine your flour and water, let it sit cozy in a warm spot, and feed it daily. With patience and love, you'll create a lively, bubbly starter that makes your bread absolutely irresistible. I can’t wait for you to try this one—happy baking!"
🥘 Ingredients:
- 🍲• 1 cup (120g) unbleached all-purpose flour or bread flour
- 🍲• ½ cup (120g) filtered water, room temperature
- 🍲• Optional: 1 tablespoon (15g) whole wheat or rye flour for added fermentation
- 🍲• A glass or plastic container with a loose lid or cloth
- 🍲• A digital kitchen scale (preferred for accuracy)
- 🍲• A spoon or spatula for mixing
👩🍳 Instructions:
- Step 1: In a clean glass or plastic container, combine the flour and water. Mix thoroughly until you achieve a smooth, thick batter with no dry flour remaining.
- Step 2: Cover the container loosely with a cloth or breathable lid to allow airflow while preventing dust or insects from getting in.
- Step 3: Place the container in a warm, draft-free spot (around 70-75°F or 21-24°C) and let it sit for 24 hours.
- Step 4: Each day, discard about half of the starter and feed it with ½ cup flour and ¼ cup water. Mix well to incorporate.
- Step 5: Continue this feeding process daily for about 5-7 days, until you notice a bubbly, sour smell and the starter doubles in size within 6-8 hours after feeding.
- Step 6: Once the starter is active and bubbly, it's ready to use for baking delicious bread or to be stored in the fridge for future use. Maintain by regular feedings or occasional discard and refresh.
💡 Pro Tips:
- 🧂• For a more vigorous starter, use whole wheat or rye flour during initial feedings to boost fermentation.
- 🧂• To troubleshoot sluggish starters, ensure you're feeding at the right temperature and maintaining consistent feeding schedules.
- 🧂• When stored in the fridge, feed the starter weekly to keep it active and healthy.
- 🧂• Use the starter at its peak bubbling and rising state for the best, most delicious bread results.
